RITA SKERTICH MEMORIAL HIKE

Rita & Elizabeth’s Story
Rita Skertich suffered an unruptured brain aneurysm at a time of limited treatment and support.
Elizabeth Ratta, Rita’s granddaughter, later survived a brain aneurysm and remains dedicated to raising awareness and funding research focusing on racial and gender disparities relating to brain aneurysms. As a Bee Foundation contributor, she is passionate about spreading awareness, particularly in disproportionately affected populations:
- Black/Hispanic people are twice as likely to have brain aneurysms rupture compared to Caucasions. Â
- Women are 1.5 times more likely to have brain aneursyms rupture compared to men.Â
The Rita Skertich Research Grant, named for Elizabeth’s grandmother, is intended to fund research topics focusing on prevention and treatment in Black and Hispanic populations and women in an effort to improve outcomes and understanding of these statistical discrepencies.
