The 2024 HoneyBash Gala was a remarkable evening dedicated to the advancement of brain aneurysm research and the development of best practices for identification, treatment and recovery. Held on November 2nd at The Pump House at Pencoyd Landing, the event brought together brain aneurysm survivors, families, healthcare professionals, advocates and supporters of The Bee Foundation (TBF) for an inspiring night of fundraising, awareness and community.

The evening served as both a celebration of the progress that has been made and a solemn reminder of the work that still needs to be done. This year’s gala highlighted the strength of the TBF community and encouraged everyone to advocate for themselves, their families and their community. It was a night filled with hope, remembrance and a shared commitment to save lives through improved brain aneurysm prevention and care.

Honoring Inspirational Speakers

The night’s program was guided by the incredible emcee, Catherine Navarro-Lee—a brain aneurysm survivor, storyteller, and TBF Ambassador. Her personal journey set a powerful tone for the evening, reminding us all of the courage and resilience of those affected by brain aneurysms.

Our keynote speaker, Kirsten Carroll, MBA/MPH, CEO of Kandu™ Health, Inc., brought unique insights into the current landscape of brain aneurysm research, patient care, and the importance of innovation in healthcare. She left guests feeling inspired and hopeful for the future.

The event also featured presentations by leading experts in the field, including:

  • Dr. Jan-Karl Burkhardt from the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Pascal Jabbour from Thomas Jefferson University, both members of the TBF Scientific Advisory Board.
  • Matt Hepler, RN, EMT-B, Stroke Program Manager at Bryn Mawr Hospital, who shared critical information about early identification and response.
  • Erin Kreszl and Christine Kondra, Co-Founders of The Bee Foundation, who have been instrumental in driving brain aneurysm research and policy forward.

Together, these speakers underscored the critical importance of continued research, awareness, and the implementation of best practices to save lives and support families impacted by brain aneurysms.

A Night of Celebration and Purpose

Guests were treated to cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a seated dinner, and a moving program filled with speeches, presentations, and personal stories from individuals impacted by brain aneurysms. There were both live and silent auctions, as well as an exciting paddle raise, all of which helped generate much-needed funds to support TBF’s mission.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of TBF’s research grants, honoring those who have been lost to brain aneurysms and celebrating the resilience of survivors.

Announcing the 2024 Research Grants

The Bee Foundation awarded several significant research grants during the gala, each dedicated to advancing our understanding of brain aneurysms and working towards prevention. These grants reflect the generosity and commitment of families who have turned personal tragedy into a beacon of hope for others.

Awarded in memory of Matthew Friedman, who passed away at just 19 years old from a brain aneurysm, this grant supports research by Dr. Tanyeri Barak from Yale University. The project, titled “WES Identifies Genetic Risk Factors of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in Pediatric and Young-Adult Patients,” aims to uncover genetic risk factors, potentially allowing for earlier detection and intervention.

This grant, funded by the McCarthy Family in honor of Brittany McCarthy, supports Dr. Rosalind Lai of the University at Buffalo in her research on “Investigating the Role of X Chromosome in the Development of Cerebral Aneurysms Through the XO Mouse Model.” Brittany’s family shared that they are proud to help fulfill her dream of helping others and hope this research will prevent future tragedies.

In honor of survivor Zac Yezzi, this grant supports Dr. Andrew T. Hale of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His project, “Identifying Somatic Mutations and Transcriptional Pathways in Cerebral Aneurysms Using Endoluminal Biopsy,” explores molecular mechanisms that may lead to preventative treatments for brain aneurysms.

The Best Practices Grant Program, awarded to Dr. Hazem Shoirah and co-investigator Kerstyn Perlman of Mount Sinai, focuses on “Impact of Race, Socioeconomic Status, and Healthcare Accessibility on Presentation and Outcome of Patients with Ruptured and Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms in Manhattan and Queens.” This grant aims to address healthcare disparities and improve treatment outcomes through the development of best practices.

A Moving Tribute to the Importance of Best Practices

A particularly impactful part of the evening was a heartfelt presentation by TBF ambassadors, who shared their perspectives on the importance of best practices in the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery journey for brain aneurysm patients. Their stories served as a reminder of the need for improved education, training, and resources for both medical professionals and families.

The Silent & Live Auctions: Supporting Research with Every Bid

The live and silent auctions were a resounding success, featuring a wide array of exclusive items, experiences, and trips. Attendees bid generously, knowing that every dollar raised would go directly toward TBF’s mission to prevent brain aneurysms. Special thanks to all the donors and businesses who contributed items and experiences—your support will help drive meaningful research and advocacy efforts in the coming year.

Looking Forward with Hope and Determination

The 2024 HoneyBash Gala was a resounding success, thanks to the generosity, commitment, and passion of everyone involved, raising $197,000 just shy of our $200,000 goal. Together, we honored the memory of those we have lost, celebrated the strength of survivors, and raised critical funds that will further brain aneurysm research and awareness initiatives. The impact of this night will be felt far beyond the gala, as the funds raised will go toward research, policy advocacy, and education efforts that can save lives.

As we reflect on this evening, we are filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. The stories shared, the funds raised, and the dedication of this community are a powerful force for change. We are committed to advancing best practices, supporting groundbreaking research, and bringing hope to those affected by brain aneurysms.

Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and supported the 2024 HoneyBash Gala. Your contributions are making a difference, and we look forward to seeing you again next year as we continue this journey together.

Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can save lives.
