Announcing TBF’s 2025 Brittany McCarthy Grant Recipient: Edgar Samaniego, MD

We are honored to announce Edgar Samaniego, MD, as the fourth annual recipient of The Brittany McCarthy 2025 Preventative Brain Aneurysm Research Grant!

Brittany McCarthy, a vibrant 21 year old passed away from a ruptured brain aneurysm in October of 2021. Led by the loving support of Brittany’s mother, sister, and step-father, Brittany’s community has raised over $150,000 in support of brain aneurysm research.

Dr. Samaniego has spent the last decade at the University of Iowa, with the past eight years dedicated specifically to advancing the field of aneurysm research. He is joined in this important work by Andres Gudino, MD, whose inspiration stems from the strength and resilience of aneurysm patients.

Together, Drs. Samaniego and Gudino are leading a groundbreaking study titled: “Radiomic-Histologic Correlation of Aneurysm Vessel Wall Biological Composition Using High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Ex-Vivo Circle of Willis.”

Their research aims to transform how we understand and treat unruptured aneurysms. Their goal is to use MRI imaging in order to better understand how specific characteristics of aneurysmal tissue can determine rupture risk. This approach goes beyond current studies which focus on shape, texture and variability as risk determining factors.
